2000–06: Career Beginnings[edit source | editbeta]

Yo Gotti released a string of independent albums. From Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game (2000), Self-Explanatory (2001), Life (2003) and Back 2 da Basics (2006) Yo Gotti became very well known in Memphis after the release of his album Life. The song "Dirty South Soldiers" featuring Lil Jon propelled Gotti into the higher ranks of Memphis rappers. The album Back 2 da Basics had even more success. The singles "I Got 'Em", "Full Time", "Shawty", and "Gangsta Party" featuring 8Ball and Bun B solidified his status as one of the top rappers from the city.

2009–12: Live from the Kitchen[edit source | editbeta]

Yo Gotti's debut studio album is called Live From The Kitchen. The album's original first single was titled ""5 Star"" and it was released on May 20, 2009. The single peaked at 79 on the Hot 100, 19 on U.S R&B and 11 on U.S Rap. "Women Lie, Men Lie" featuring Lil Wayne was the second official single released December 11, 2009. The song peaked at 81 on 100, 22 on the U.S R&B and 12 on the U.S Rap. "Look In the Mirror" was the third single released 7 months after his second single on July 27, 2010. The song peaked at 97 on the U.S R&B chart. "For the Hood" featured rapper Gucci ManeLive From The Kitchen debuted at number 12 on the US Billboard 200, with 16,000 copies in its first week of sales in the United States.[1] After three weeks on the chart the album has sold 36,000 copies in the United States.[2] In 2012 due to Gotti's views of the low sales of his debut album he took his departure from RCA Records & Polo Grounds Music. In 2012 he released 7th version of his well known mixtape series Cocaine Muzik entitled Cocaine Muzik 7: The World Is Yours.

2013–present: I Am[edit source | editbeta]

In early 2013 Gotti announced that him & his label CMG had been signed to a distribution deal with Epic Records from longtime business partner L.A. Reid.[3] The first single from his second studio album I Am is titled "Act Right" and features Young Jeezy and YG.[4] The song was released for Rhythmic contemporary radio airplay on June 25, 2013.[5] The song debuted at #5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, making it one of his highest mainstream entries, and at #39 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. I Am is scheduled for release on November 19, 2013.

Controversy[edit source | editbeta]

A beef between Gotti and frequent collaborator Gucci Mane began on October 17, 2012, when he was releasing his mixtape CM7: The World Is Yours on the same day as Gucci's mixtape Trap God.[6] According to the latter, real name Radric Davis, he stated in an interview with Hot 107.9, "My main problem with him was that he dropped his mixtape on 10/17 (the name of Gucci Mane's record label, 1017 Bricksquad), and tried to like ride my wave, like he was an artist of mine or we get some kind of money together." Yo Gotti denied in another interview with K97 that he chose the date intentionally, but simply didn't realize it."[7]
